Between Ré and Oléron the range runs to 6m, lock gates open on their own schedule, and the oyster beds keep the channel honest — so a day's sailing starts with the tide table and a pencil. Barboat is a small, plain monohull: two cabins, four berths, easy to handle short-handed. Right for a couple, two friends, or anyone who wants to learn tidal water properly. Less right for people who want room to spread out.

Lock gates work to the tide, so departure moves with it.

Sails up past the Ré bridge, wind filling in from the west.
- 11:30Fort Boyard
Through the gap between Ré and Oléron, timed with the stream.

Anchor off Oléron's east shore, well clear of the oyster beds.
- 15:30Back on the flood
Tide turns and carries us upwind toward the mainland.
