01 · Overview
Yacht charter in Athens
Almost every boat here leaves from Alimos Marina on the Athens coast, and that one marina holds one of the biggest charter fleets in the Mediterranean. The Saronic Gulf in front of it is sheltered and the islands are close together, which makes it a good first week. Experienced crews use Athens as the jumping-off point for the Cyclades.
02 · The sailing grounds
The sailing grounds
Aegina is the first island, about three to four hours from Alimos. Beyond it, Poros sits in a narrow channel against the Peloponnese, Hydra has no cars and a tiny, busy harbour, and Spetses lies at the mouth of the Argolic Gulf. Ermioni, Porto Cheli and Nafplio on the mainland add quieter stops. Heading south-east instead takes you to Kea and Kythnos, the nearest Cyclades.
03 · Season and weather
Season and weather
April to October. The Saronic is more sheltered from the summer meltemi than the open Aegean, though the wind still reaches it in July and August. Spring and autumn give warm, calmer weeks and lower prices.

Ways to charter
Boats in Athens offer these kinds of charter (a boat can offer more than one):
Bareboat (675 boats): you skipper the boat yourself. The skipper needs a licence the operator accepts, and usually a VHF radio certificate.
Crewed (132 boats): a skipper and crew come with the boat, often with a cook or host.
Skippered (43 boats): a professional skipper sails the boat with you, and you crew as much or as little as you like.
Day charter (17 boats): a single day on the water, usually with crew.
All-inclusive (12 boats): crew, meals and drinks are in one price.
Cabin charter (5 boats): you book one cabin on a shared, crewed boat rather than the whole yacht.
Regatta (4 boats): boats prepared and entered for racing events.
