Yacht charter in the British Virgin Islands

The BVI are built for chartering. The islands circle the sheltered Sir Francis Drake Channel, most are in sight of each other, and the trade winds blow steadily from the east. It is one of the largest catamaran fleets on our desk, and a common first Caribbean charter.

The sailing grounds

Almost every boat leaves from Road Town on Tortola. Norman Island, Peter Island and Cooper Island are close, Virgin Gorda's boulders at The Baths and the North Sound are a day's sail east, and Jost Van Dyke is the classic beach-bar stop to the north-west. Anegada, flat and surrounded by reef, is for the more experienced. National park mooring buoys protect the reefs.

December to April is the peak season, with steady trade winds. The hurricane season runs from June to November, and prices on our desk are lowest in the late summer.

The fleet on our desk

We list about 290 boats in the British Virgin Islands from 4 charter companies. The fleet is catamarans (76%) and sailing yachts (24%). Half the boats were built in 2024 or later, and the typical boat is about 45 ft long with 4 cabins. The most common models here are the Leopard 46PC, Leopard 50 and Leopard 42.

Ways to charter

Boats in the British Virgin Islands offer these kinds of charter (a boat can offer more than one):

Bareboat (227 boats): you skipper the boat yourself. The skipper needs a licence the operator accepts, and usually a VHF radio certificate.

Crewed (85 boats): a skipper and crew come with the boat, often with a cook or host.

What a week costs

These prices are for the boat for seven nights, taken from the 2027 offers we hold in November 2026.

In September, the cheapest month for most boats here, a well-priced boat costs about €3,700 a week and the middle of the fleet about €4,900.

In March, the dearest month, the middle of the fleet costs about €7,400 a week.

The cheapest tenth of boats here start from about €3,200 a week, and the top tenth from about €8,900.

Fuel, marina fees, the final clean and any skipper are usually extra on bareboat yachts; crewed boats include their crew. Each boat page shows what its operator includes and the live price for your dates.

Boats start from Wickhams Cay II Marina (248 boats) and Fort Burt Marina (41 boats). Many boats can start on any day of the week, with Saturday the most common.

08 · Getting there

Getting there

Beef Island airport, next to Tortola, has connections via Puerto Rico, Antigua and other hubs. Ferries also run from St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands.
