01 · Overview
Yacht charter in Greece
Greece has more boats on our desk than any other country, and more islands than most crews could visit in a lifetime. Each sailing area has its own character, from the gentle Ionian to the windy Cyclades. Bareboat sailing is the norm, with large crewed, skippered and flotilla offers too.
02 · The sailing grounds
The sailing grounds
The Ionian, around Lefkada and Corfu, has the easiest sailing. Athens is the base for the Saronic islands and the doorway to the Cyclades. The Dodecanese run along the Turkish coast from Kos and Rhodes. The Sporades, around Skiathos, are green and quieter. Volos is the base for the Pagasetic Gulf and the Sporades from the mainland.
Sailing areas on our desk:
Ionian Islands: about 1,200 boats
Athens: about 830 boats
Cyclades: about 590 boats
Dodecanese: about 270 boats
Skiathos: about 50 boats
03 · Season and weather
Season and weather
May to October. The meltemi, a strong north wind, blows in the Aegean in July and August; the Ionian has gentler afternoon breezes.
04 · The fleet on our desk
The fleet on our desk
We list about 3,300 boats in Greece from about 410 charter companies. The fleet is sailing yachts (61%), catamarans (33%) and motor yachts and motorboats (5%). Half the boats were built in 2020 or later, and the typical boat is about 45 ft long with 4 cabins. The largest sleep guests in up to 16 cabins. The most common models here are the Lagoon 42, Lagoon 46 and Oceanis 46.1.
05 · Ways to charter
Ways to charter
Boats in Greece offer these kinds of charter (a boat can offer more than one):
Bareboat (2770 boats): you skipper the boat yourself. The skipper needs a licence the operator accepts, and usually a VHF radio certificate.
Crewed (510 boats): a skipper and crew come with the boat, often with a cook or host.
Day charter (164 boats): a single day on the water, usually with crew.
Skippered (157 boats): a professional skipper sails the boat with you, and you crew as much or as little as you like.
Flotilla (125 boats): you sail your own boat in a group, with a lead boat and crew on hand to help.
Cabin charter (44 boats): you book one cabin on a shared, crewed boat rather than the whole yacht.
All-inclusive (26 boats): crew, meals and drinks are in one price.
Regatta (18 boats): boats prepared and entered for racing events.
