01 · Overview
Yacht charter in Kvarner
Kvarner is the closest Croatian sailing area to Austria, Germany and Slovenia, so many crews drive to the boat. The islands are large and high, the channels between them are deep, and the towns have a Venetian and Austro-Hungarian feel. It is a good area for a first bareboat week: harbours are close together and well equipped.
02 · The sailing grounds
The sailing grounds
Marina Punat on Krk is the biggest base on our desk here. From Krk you can cross to Cres and Lošinj, the long islands that close the gulf to the west, or head south to Rab and the smaller islands around Lošinj such as Susak and Ilovik. Mali Lošinj is the main town and harbour. Some boats in this area start further west on the Istrian side, at Pomer and Medulin.
03 · Season and weather
Season and weather
Sail from May to early October. The bura is the wind to respect here: it can arrive quickly from the north-east, especially under the Velebit mountains, and is strongest outside summer. Summer days usually bring a light-to-moderate afternoon breeze.
